This charming shingle house — one of the oldest houses in Mill Valley, California — was bought as a fixer upper by a growing family. Oriented with great views of nearby Mt. Tam, the house pulls in sunlight and mountain breezes. The owners tapped veteran architect, Heidi Richardson, Richardson Architects, to return the rundown property to its former glory as well as adapt the interior for today’s more casual lifestyle.

Hamptons-style Shingle Home

The house had been abused with numerous inappropriate additions and renovations over the years. Richardson Architects adjusted interior floor levels to achieve four full stories. A central staircase connects all levels, with the top two floors for bedrooms, the main level for living and entertaining and the lowest level for office and a playroom. A guest cottage is adjacent to the house.

Interiors

For the interiors, the family turned to designer Katie Martinez, who infused the house with a modern palette. Light, bright colors are complemented with darker, moodier accents. Clean, streamlined silhouettes marry with shaker-inspired furnishings and elegant light fixtures. The house is as sophisticated as it is relaxed.

The wide-board flooring is Oak – similar here.

Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen Cabinetry: Custom cabinets. The cabinets, trim, and ceiling are painted Benjamin Moore Simply White.

Countertops: Island topped by Calacatta Gold marble, which is also applied as shelf over range.

Hardware: Sun Valley Bronze in a nickel finish – similar Pulls, Knobs, Appliance Pulls.

Range is by Wolf.

Breakfast Room

The kitchen opens to an airy breakfast room and Family room. Paint color walls in Ammonite from Farrow and Ball.

The black window mullions are painted in Farrow and Ball Off Black.

Dining Room

The formal dining room features a dramatic charcoal black paneling. Simple lighting and furniture creates balance in this space.

Wood paneling painted Down Pipe from Farrow and Ball.

Powder Room

Featuring dark wood paneling, painted Down Pipe from Farrow and Ball and a custom grey marble floating vanity, this powder bath is sure to impress any guest!

This lovely girl’s bedroom is painted in Simply White by Benjamin Moore. Pillows are custom.

A custom floating desk is tucked into a small nook with Tongue and Groove paneling.

Bathroom

This guest bathroom features custom cabinetry painted in Benjamin Moore Simply White, Carrera marble countertop and brass hardware. Timeless!

For the outdoors, Integrated Design Studio (IDS) created an outdoor play area for the three little girls, complete with pool and outdoor kitchen, and an unobstructed view of Mt. Tam. What could be better?
